Threshold began with a simple question: how close will you let me come?
I arrived in Tanzania and Zanzibar as a stranger, different culture, different language, different skin. But that strangeness was not an obstacle. It was the canvas. It made visible something that familiarity tends to conceal: the precise moment when another person decides whether or not to let you in.
But I did not choose just any stranger. I chose women.
Because the woman is the beginning. She is the origin of life, the carrier of culture, the embodiment of a strength that centuries of patriarchal structure have tried and failed to extinguish. In Tanzania and Zanzibar, this tension is alive and present. These are societies where deep cultural tradition defines the role and place of women, where legal progress and social reality do not always move together, where a woman’s gaze toward a foreign man is never accidental. It is always a choice.
That choice became the subject of this work.
Each portrait is built from the inside out , not an observation, but an encounter. Some women opened immediately. Others held their ground. Some let me reach the threshold and no further. The gaze in each image is the proof of what passed between us: the distance that remained, or the distance that dissolved.
Threshold is not a document of place. It is a record of proximity ,how it is asked for, how it is granted, and what it reveals about the women who decide.
