In Japanese, the word shashin (写真) means "capturing or reflecting the truth," giving photography in Japan an ethical dimension beyond the optical basis of the English term. This cultural view has shaped the approach of Japanese photographers, including the author, who sees photography as a medium inherently tied to reality. While the idea of photography as truth may seem outdated, the medium still relies on capturing real light, and thus real moments. Street photography, in particular, becomes a record of chaotic public life, where the photographer’s selection from this chaos becomes part of the recorded truth—that someone existed in that space at that moment. The photographer aims to capture this unfiltered truth, often rejecting composed, idealized images. In this series, photos were taken candidly without using the viewfinder, embracing imperfection and spontaneity to reflect authentic moments on the streets of New York.
