This image explores the Kanga, a traditional East African fabric rich in color, symbolism, and meaning. Worn proudly by women, each piece features patterns and Swahili messages—proverbs, poems or political statements—turning the cloth into a tool for personal and cultural expression. Continuing my portrait work with women through a documentary yet ornamental lens, I invited a young Tanzanian woman to pose in a studio inspired by classic African photography, paying tribute to artists like Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keita. Her portrait is framed with kanga motifs and the Swahili phrase "Penye nia pana njia" ("Where there is a will, there is a way"), and set in a brightly painted carved wooden frame from Zanzibar, echoing the island’s multicultural heritage.
