Future Earthquake

"Future Earthquake" revisits the devastation of the March 31, 1983 earthquake in Popayán, my hometown, when I was two months old. The tragedy left a lasting mark on both the city and its collective memory. Blending traditional documentary photography with AI, the project questions the nature and authenticity of visual representation in the digital age. Iconic images from the earthquake were selected and described in detail, then reimagined using generative AI. These original and AI-generated images were printed, sliced into vertical strips, and assembled into collages, intertwining historical documentation with digital reinterpretation. The project explores how photography, even when seemingly objective, is always a recreation of reality. By juxtaposing the real with the reimagined, it highlights photography’s dual role as both testimony and interpretation. Ultimately, it asks: How can technology reshape our understanding of the past and the way we remember?"
