Mention Honorable
In a global megacity, solitude can be hard to find, and loneliness can often feel like a contradiction. While surrounded by millions, the nature of aloneness takes a different shape. It has to be sought out, uncovered, and savored in its small and rare moments. It is within Peter Nitsch’s NEOW that we are given space to dwell on this idea as the photographer invites us on a journey through the city after dark, when the streets are sparse and a relative quietude can be found. Nitsch began this work 3 months prior to the sudden passing of his mother. Afterwards, the dwelling on loneliness took on a different kind of meaning. The photographer followed his sadness, embracing an opportunity for unimpeded, bittersweet self-reflection. And it was in the cloak of night amid the paved surfaces of these big city streets that he went in search of tranquility. Through NEOW we experience the urbanized loneliness that recalls the visual world building of Edward Hopper, a dramatic noir set to the city’s glow, and in a metropolis that could be any in the world.
