This work delves into the concept of human vulnerability, a term of Latin origin meaning "something that causes injury." In philosophical terms, vulnerability is intrinsic to the human condition, marked by finitude and frailty, which can never be entirely overcome. Certain groups are perceived as more exposed, with diminished capacity to withstand abuse and torture. As Judith Butler eloquently states, "The body implies mortality, vulnerability, agency: The skin and the flesh expose us to the gaze of others, but also to touch and to violence."
In this project, vulnerability is explored as a heuristic tool, interwoven with the environmental philosophy of Heart Sutra Buddhism, to examine the relationship between human and non-human environments. The project features the "Heart Sutra" inscribed on the body and face of the model, alongside elements like the broken egg symbolizing the natural environment. These elements highlight the subjectivity and indirection of the body, and its connection to the world, encapsulating the essence of vulnerability.
