Silver Medal
I moved from Berlin to Leipzig in 2013, and found an apartment at the end of Georg-Schwarz-Straße. The house has been abandoned for 16 years. Inside, I found old newspapers from 1972, the “Neues Deutschland,” heralding socialism's victory. And my landlord, lived in this house for generations, ran his family coal business in the backyard. New neighbors moved in, and we became friends. I witnessed their kids growing up and they where teaching me more about the changing societal and political landscapes. The street, named after an anti-fascist murdered by the Nazis, had been a lively craft and restaurant area until the 1980s. When I moved in, many houses were empty and dilapidated. In 2014, I found a box with Orwo negatives from 1987 and began photographing every empty house on the 2.9 km long street. Over time, the house filled with residents, and my photo archive grew. The courtyard became a playground, and renovations gradually began in the neighborhood. When major renovations started, I began taking portraits of my neighbors. All images were taken on GDR-produced b/w film from 1987, between 2014-2024
